Warmest greetings to the Filipino community in Hong Kong and the devoted readers of Pangyao Magazine!
This June, we commemorate the 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with the theme “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” These three words capture the essence of our journey as a people: the freedom we have achieved; the future we continue to shape; and the history we embrace as the source of our national pride and identity.
On 12 June 2026, the Consulate General will mark Independence Day with the
traditional Agahang Bayan, a patriotic breakfast gathering, and the cocktail reception with representatives of the Hong Kong Government and the diplomatic corps.

Two days later, on 14 June, the spirit of Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan. will find its fullest expression in the Araw ng Kalayaan, Kagitingan ng mga Bagong Bayani at Kapangyawan Friendship Festival (KKK Festival) at Chater Road. This event brings together the 128th Independence Day, 31st Migrant Workers’ Day, and the 11th Kapangyawan Friendship Festival in one big celebration. Through the flag‑raising ceremony, cultural performances, and the participation of thousands of Overseas Filipinos and Hong Kong residents, the KKK Festival stands as a living testament to our freedom, resilience, and solidarity, witnessed by the world city of Hong Kong.
Our commemorations of National Heritage Month 2026, last May themed “Roots and Horizons. Shared Heritage. Our Collective Future.”, included the revival of Flores de Mayo in Hong Kong. Led by the Consulate General, the Santacruzan parade and cultural program reflected devotion, creativity, and the enduring strength of our traditions.
The Consulate General also launched the Cultural Bearers Program, conducted from February to May under the guidance of Professor Wovi Villanueva of the University of Makati. This cultural upskilling program recognized Overseas Filipino Workers as budding artists, dancers, writers, poets, and fashion designers, and culminated in the Philippine Booth at the 4th Art Hong Kong Expo last month, where OFWs who crossed cultural “barriers to bearers” showcased their artistry in painting, poetry, textiles, and cultural performances.
Looking ahead, July will feature National Culture Consciousness Week, highlighted by a fashion show with MABIKA showcasing Inabel fabric creations. We will also welcome Philippine startups to Hong Kong during LEAP East 2026, fostering collaboration in technology and innovation between our home-grown enterprises and talents and Hong Kong’s international enterprises and innovators.
As we celebrate Independence Day and the milestones of culture and community, may the KKKs, expressed in the national theme “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” and in the KKK Festival, remind us that the value of freedom is honored in history and strengthened through community.
Mabuhay ang ating Kalayaan! Mabuhay ang ating Inangbayan!
