JINGLE BELLS
Written by James Lord Pierpont in the mid-19th century, “Jingle Bells” is perhaps one of the most recognisable Christmas songs of all time. The song was originally penned in celebration of Thanksgiving, published under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh”. However, its catchy tune and playful lyrics quickly caught on, ultimately leading to its rebranding as a Christmas anthem.
The song paints a picture of a sleigh ride through the snow, capturing the fun and excitement of the winter season. The unforgettable chorus, with its iconic line “Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,” immediately evokes images of snow-covered landscapes and holiday cheer.
Fun fact: “Jingle Bells” was one of the first songs to be played in outer space. On 16th December, 1965, astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra, orbiting Earth aboard the Gemini 6 spacecraft, pranked mission control in Houston by reporting they were tracking a mysterious flying object from the North Pole. To Houston’s surprise, the duo then broke into a rendition of “Jingle Bells” on a harmonica and sleigh bells they had smuggled onto the spacecraft!

We Wish You a Merry Christmas
The origins of this beloved Christmas song are a little murky, with some sources tracing it back to 16th-century England. However, the version we know and love today has been attributed to a Bristol-based composer, conductor, and organist named Arthur Warrell (1883–1939).
The lyrics describe a group of carolers travelling from house to house, singing and spreading holiday cheer as they go. It has become a popular choice at the end of holiday events and gatherings, perfectly capturing the communal spirit of the season.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU
A modern Christmas classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was written and performed by Mariah Carey in 1994 and has since become a staple on holiday playlists. It is the best-selling Christmas song of all time in the United States, with over 16 million copies sold worldwide. As of 2023, the song is estimated to have earned over USD 100 million in royalties. Its popularity was further cemented on December 25, 2018, when it set a single-day Spotify streaming record with 10.82 million plays in 24 hours.
Due to the song’s lasting impact, Carey has been dubbed the “Queen of Christmas” – an honorific title she has embraced by creating an annual tradition: since 2019, she has posted a video at the stroke of midnight on 1st November, officially declaring the start of the Christmas music season (naturally, promoting her own iconic hit in the process!).
With its upbeat tempo and catchy melody, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” perfectly captures the joy and anticipation of the holiday season. Yet, beneath its jolly surface, the song resonates deeply with those who spend the holidays apart from loved ones, conveying a universal longing for love and companionship. Ultimately, it reminds us that the greatest gift is simply being with those we hold dear.
